Media's Influence In Truman's World
In our world today everyone is influenced by advertising and media because it is such a constant outside pressure to have what everyone else has and to try and fit in with the constant change in fads. We subconsciously want what others have because is it human nature to conform to the latest trends and fashions. "As much as we like to think of ourselves as individuals, the fact is that we're driven to fit in" (Psychology Today). We feel like we need to wear or have what others have such as an Iphone or Nike sneakers. When girls walk around in leggings and Uggs other girls notice this fashion trend and adapt to a new style. Styles and fads continue to change as decades pass and it is because of advertisement and product placement that people become subconsciously obsessed with having or doing whatever is deemed “cool” or “in” at the time. This power that the media has over us, even in something as trivial as what we are wearing, is alarming and could potentially be a threat to the future of human kind. When one driving force can be the deciding factor for a nation, or more drastically for the world, unforeseen consequences can occur (BBC Prison Study).
